Firewood restrictions
DNR firewood rules
Leave firewood at home and purchase approved firewood near or within your campground. Most state parks offer quality firewood for sale at a reasonable price. To find an approved firewood vendor near your destination, check the approved firewood vendor listing.
Remember to keep your receipt to show proof of purchase.
Do not leave any unused wood behind and do not take it with you to another destination.
Unapproved firewood brought to a state-administered campground will be confiscated and is subject to a $100 fine.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Attention campers from outside of Minnesota
Do not bring firewood with you to a state-administered campground. It will be confiscated, and if the wood is from a quarantined area, you could be violating a federal law that forbids moving wood of any kind out of your state or county of residence.
Attention campers in Minnesota
Use only firewood from an approved DNR firewood vendor within 100 miles of where you will use it. To find an approved firewood vendor near your destination, check the web page for each state park, state forest or day-use area. Be sure to keep your receipt to show proof of purchase.
You can buy firewood in, or just outside of, almost every Minnesota State Park.
Why firewood restrictions?
In order to help prevent the introduction and spread of invasive pests such as emerald ash borer (EAB) into state lands, a statute was amended in May, 2007, banning all firewood in state-owned camping facilities unless approved by the DNR (M.S. 89.551, Sec. 2, Approved Firewood Required). In fact, not only EAB but many different forest pests and diseases can be accidentally transported in firewood.
In everyday language, it is now illegal to bring firewood into state parks, state forest campgrounds or day-use areas unless purchased from an approved vendor.
Approved firewood is:
Wood that was harvested in Minnesota.
Wood that was harvested not more than 100 miles from the state-administered lands where it will be burned.
Kiln-dried, unpainted, unstained dimensional lumber is also approved for use on state lands.
The Division of Forestry handles the approval process and maintains the DNR website database that lists the vendors. By June 2008, more than 500 vendors throughout Minnesota were approved.
Firewood approved for use on DNR- administered lands includes the following:
Firewood sold to visitors at DNR facilities.
Firewood from an approved DNR firewood vendor within 100 miles of where you will use it. To find an approved firewood vendor near your destination, check the approved firewood vendor listing. Be sure to keep your receipt to show proof of purchase.
Kiln-dried, unpainted, unstained dimensional lumber (such as 2x4 or 4x6 scraps from a building project) free of metal or other foreign substances. Pallet wood is not approved firewood.
